A Bill to Increase the Chalk Allowance of Teachers to P10,000

To compensate for the effort and generosity of public school teachers in providing the necessary materials, not just chalks, for the development of their classes and teaching-learning process, Sen. Ralph Recto has just filed a bill which aims to give an additional P6,500 to the existing P3,500 chalk allowance making it P10,000 every single year.

The senator explains that this will allow the teachers to purchase their most needed materials in teaching like papers, chalks, ballpens, erasers, scissors, and a lot more which could last for the whole school year.

“This translates into a measly P16 a day. This is not enough in this age of internet when USBs, in addition to the traditional paper and writing materials, are now part of the teacher’s tool box,” Sen. Recto said.

“Kulang talaga. Especially in this digital age, when IT-assisted learning is the norm, there are computer-and broadband-use related supplies needed, and these must be considered in computing the supplies the teacher needs,” Recto added.
