Duterte admits he cannot fulfill his promise to teachers this year

President Rodrigo R. Duterte admitted that he cannot give this year the salary increase he promised to public school teachers since the government has no sufficient funds to cover it.

During the meeting with the Cabinet officials in Batangas, the President said, “The teachers are shouting. That cannot be. I don’t have that big money.”

With the approval of the Salary Standardization Law of 2019 or the SSL V, few of our fellow public school teachers have extended their gratitude for it while most have expressed their disappointment to the promises of the President which clearly were not delivered with the small amount of increase in the approved SSL V.

Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo, on the other hand, shed some light as he explained that the President still intends to fulfill his promise only not this year as the government has no enough funds for almost a million public school teachers.

“As we have said before, the promise of the President will be complied with. Maybe not this year, but his term has not yet ended," Panelo said.
